For 10 USD a year you are a Member, you support Nevada Cure and you can join our Monthly Meetings (directly in Las Vegas or by phoning in). Prisoners are welcome to join as well, for 2 USD a year.
Every day, people suffer abuse while in the custody of the Nevada Prison system. The abuses are not trivial: physical beatings, threats and verbal abuse by staff, denial of adequate medical care, deprivation of food as a punishment. There is ongoing retaliation against prisoners for reporting these abuses - even for expressing opinions about it. Using the official grievance process to complain about misconduct has been known to spur further misconduct, or outright mistreatment.
When these abuses occur, prisoners’ family and friends are often unable to obtain information about what has occurred, so it has been almost impossible to shine light on the abuse. You can’t change what is not seen.
In the past year, Nevada CURE (NV-CURE) has begun to shine a light on and attack these and other problems. NV-CURE was re-organized and incorporated in May of 2011 as an activist organization dedicated to prison and parole reform through the education of the public on the problems with those systems. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished in a fairly short time with volunteers doing all of the work. Please read about some of our accomplishments below.
While we are proud of our accomplishments, we’re also painfully aware that these are the first, small steps on a long, uphill road. We’re poised to continue. We will search for information, and press for answers. We’ll push for humane treatment of prisoners.
We hope you’ll help us do more, by making a donation that will help us pay for office supplies, travel expenses, printing and publishing costs, phone bills, and other necessary expenses in pursuit of justice, fairness and humane treatment for all.
We organize ongoing vook drives to get fresh books (paperback, no hard covers) to the prison libraries. Prisoners need to read, learn, keep their minds occupied, so please consider donating books you do not read to our Book Drives. Plz contact us to find out where you can donate your paperbacks to!
· We have organized and attended quarterly meetings with Director Cox. Face to face discussion of important issues has reportedly helped to reduce incidents of physical abuse of prisoners by staff; and, on the units in which denial of food as a punishment has been most prevalent, an Associate Warden is now present during feedings.
· We publish a quarterly Informational Bulletin containing news and legal information of interest to prisoners and their families and friends.
· We have answered at least a thousand letters from prisoners, providing information on re-entry, grievance procedure, calculation of good-time, referral to other organizations and agencies and more.
· We have launched a public information campaign by posting affidavits from prisoners on our website nevadacure.org.
· We have written and distributed a Grievance Instruction Handbook to hundreds of prisoners at no charge to assist prisoners in understanding and utilizing the grievance process.
· We have initiated public records requests pursuant to Nevada’s Open Records Act and we have received detailed information about prisoner diet and nutrition. We are currently seeking health care statistics.
· We are working with Boyd Law School at UNLV to translate key documents such as administrative regulations and operating procedures from English to Spanish.
· We have partnered with re-entry resources and have insured that prisoners will have a safe place to go upon release.
To say that Nevada CURE operates on a shoestring would be to overstate our financial resources. Much of what we do merely requires stubborn and patient persistence. Our volunteers are already supplying that.
But we also need funds to be effective. We will soon make a list of projects we wish to carry out in the new year, even as we carry on with what we’ve already started. Any donation you can make will be assist us in reaching our goals of justice and fairness for Nevada’s prisoners.
