This is from a letter sent in to Nevada-Cure about a hungerstrike begun at Ely State Prison from Christmas 2015 onwards. A 49 page handwritten letter is attached. PLEASE write to James Ofeldt in support of his effort and sacrifice to change conditions at the solitary confinement prison of Ely, Ely State Prison. Let's change the permanent lockdown and torture in Nevada!
23 dec. 2015
To Whom it may concern,
Enclosed you shall find a copy of A Manifesto to the Warden, written by a friend incarcerated at Nevada's Ely State Prison: James D. Ofeldt, NDOC # 81842.
As you will read, James has embarked on a hunger strike to protest condeitions at the facility. He is in need of assistance to call attention to the deplorable state of affairs at the prison to effect positive change in the environment for all of the inmates once and for all.
In spite of recent publicity exploring and exposing slackened standards at the prison and the ensuing legal decisions and court orders, conditions remain substandard: inadequate corporal, intellectual, medical, and mental health care services. It is his experience that neither the attitudes nor behaviors of the administration towards the inmates have fundamentally changed.
More guards may be employed to fulfill the letter of the law. If perceptions of the administration do not change to improve the actual treatment of the inmates, does that effort fulfill the spirit of the law?
It is James Ofeldt's desire and intention to call attention to the situation for the betterment of all inmates, especially those frail in body, mind, and spirit, unable or unwilling to speak up for themseves.
Please consider the significance of the message, rather than the situation of the messenger.
Your support and voice in this effort to improve the health, welfare, and well-being of the inmates at Ely State Prison would be greatly appreciated.
Written by Weston M. Peace on behalf of James Ofeldt.
